Communication, the Other, the Inexpressible. Patient Self-help
Patient self-help groups in Quebec are examined from the viewpoint of the particular relationship to speech that is found in them, and of ils translation into a representation of illness as hindered communication. The study focuses on the credo of these groups to the effect that only those who have lived through the same experience can truly understand one another. We seek to identify the cultural signification of this idea, and the meaning it gives to the self-relationship and to the relationship with others among the patients participating in these groups.

Résumé
Cet article examine des groupes d'entraide de malades au Québec sous deux aspects : le rapport particulier à la parole et sa traduction dans une représentation de la maladie comme communication entravée. L'étude se centre sur le credo de ces groupes voulant que seuls ceux qui ont vécu la même expérience peuvent véritablement se comprendre. Nous cherchons à dégager la signification culturelle de cette idée, ce qu'elle dit du rapport à soi et du rapport aux autres chez les malades participant à ces groupes.
