The Speaking Stone or Ventriloquous Knowledge. Rukuba Ans* er to the Masks and the Possession Cuits oftheir \eighboring Ethnie Croups
This article examines the status assigned by the Rukuba to vocal manifestations of the possessed and the masks belonging to the cuits of neighboring ethnie groups. The Rukuba hâve neither possession nor masks. tw o institutions they despise. This contempt shows itself positively when they use a sort of vocal divination which is the reverse of both the language of the possessed and of the masks employed by the neighbors in forming vvith them a transformation group.
Résumé
Cet article examine le statut des manifestations vocales que les Rukuba assignent aux masques et aux possédés des sociétés voisines. Les Rukuba n'ont ni cultes de possession ni masques, deux institutions qu'ils méprisent. Ce dédain est montré en creux dans une technique divinatoire sonore qui prend le contrepied des langages des possédés et des masques des sociétés voisines en formant avec eux un groupe de transformations.
